Heroes are special, in the way that they can help others while putting away their own needs. Such heroes can be seen in many places where they help others without worrying about problems they have for themselves. People who can be defined as heroes in S.E. Hinton’s book, The Outsiders, are the teenagers Johnny, Sherri, and Ponyboy. Johnny can be defined as a hero in the book, because of what he does for other people. Johnny proved that he could be a hero, when he dashed in with Ponyboy in the burning church with no regard whether he would survive or not. Johnny also proved to be a hero when he stood up to his own personal hero, and even though he was scared, he wanted to help someone else, as shown in this quote: “"Leave her alone, Dally." "Huh?" Dally was taken off guard. He stared at Johnny in disbelief. Johnny couldn't say "Boo" to a goose.” (Hinton 24) Johnny helps Sherri, even though he was really scared of other things, much less than Dally. Sherri can be considered a hero for this because she aided the Greasers, even though that could mean hostility toward her from other Socs. She helped them in this quote as Dally says: “Hey, I didn't tell you we got us a spy." "A spy?" Johnny looked up from his banana split. "Who?" 'That good-lookin' broad I tried to pick up that night you killed the Soc. The redhead, Cherry what's-her-name." (Hinton 84) This quote deeply explains how Sherri helped out the greasers, by helping them see the Soc’s

What motivated Johnny to risk his life and run into the burning church to save the schoolchildren, was the way Dally spoke to him, in a tone he never uses, and that Dally cared about Johnny. To begin with,“Dally never talked like that. Never. Dally didn’t give a Yankee dime about anyone but himself, and he was cold and hard and mean. He never talked about his past or being in jail that way (Hinton 90).”…

When he was introduced as the Laphams’ apprentice, he was stubborn and rude to others that acted as different as him. He acted only a little softer when talking with Cilla and Isannah, but he still acted tough. The moment he was kicked out the Lapham’s home by Mrs. Lapham for disrespecting Mr. Tweedie, Johnny felt anything but sympathetic. He continued to stroll around town with his bad attitude, until he saw the Boston Observer.…

Despite this novel not being one of action or adventure, it takes its own definition of a hero due to the main character, John. By his actions within the novel, I will prove that John shows the qualities of selflessness, courage, and humility. True heroes put others ahead of them, without an expectation of payback or self-gratification.…
