LESSON 1: The Hobbit A philologist and professor of medieval literature at the University of Oxford named John Ronald Reuel Tolkien created many fascinating fantasies such as “Beowulf” and one of the most well-known, “The Lord of the Rings”. The creation of “The Hobbit” was said to be the prequel to the “Lord of the Rings” in world of middle earth. The main character, or protagonist, of this novel is a timid, small Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. He was surprised with a visit by famous fictional wizard, Gandalf, and was asked to help join a group of dwarves to attain lost treasures under a mountain. They often lived very peaceful lives therefore never needed specific traits such as confidence and courage. Bilbo Baggins, however, showed many courageous feats in the beginning of their adventure when Thorin told him how they “may never return” which caused him to faint, but he finally found the COURAGE to join the company. During their journey, Bilbo is in constant danger. His courage and confidence was constantly put to the test and example of this was when they encountered trolls. In his company, Bilbo’s role was the ‘burglar’. So to prove his worth, he attempted to steal the troll’s purse, but in the end failed miserably due to his lack of experience. Bilbo’s failure almost results in the death of the dwarves, but luckily Gandalf is there to save them. As the adventure continues, Bilbo begins to show even more courage than he thought he had when they got lost can captured by really, really big spiders.
