The Hobbit is the story of Bilbo Baggins and his friends on an adventure to retrieve their treasure from the Lonely Mountain. The plot opens up in the peaceful hobbit society. The atmosphere of Hobbition is totally different from the other places they will pass through on their journey. Bilbo Baggins is a 50-year old hobbit who lives in a hole on the side of the Hill. Bilbo loves the serenity of his hole and would do nothing to upset it. He eats frequently throughout the day and experiences no excitement. One day while sitting on his porch he meets Gandalf, an elderly wizard. Little did Bilbo know that his Took side would soon be exploited.

The setting begins to change. The solidity and calmness of the hobbit society is being left behind. Now they enter the Misty Mountains. The Misty Mountains are inhabited by good things and bad things. The adventurers are trying to reach Elrond who lives in the Last Lonely House in Rivendell. While passing through the Misty Mountains, the group encounters three trolls. Their names are Bill, Bert, and Tom. The Mountains were very cold and dangerous to travel. Giant rock men hurled boulders on the sides of the mountain. The travelers found a safe crack in the side of a mountain. There, they were ambushed by goblins. The goblins lived throughout the mountain. They created an elaborate system of caverns. The tunnels were rough and uncomfortable. The group was taken to the Goblin king. He was determined to feed on the travelers, but out of no-where Gandalf came in and killed the king. It was total chaos and Bilbo found himself separated from the group.
Bilbo found himself alone and fearful. During this part of the story Bilbo must take it upon himself to find his friends safely. Bilbo is still undergoing a change in persona. The fact that he has no one to rely on, and is in an environment totally different than what he is used to is completely new. While Bilbo is alone he encounters a big eyed creature named Gollum. Gollum is a very solitary creature. It is in this way that he and Bilbo are kind of similar. He lives within the mountain in a wet foul area and feeds on anything he can. His diet consists of goblins and fish
