There is a famous proverb which states that, “good habits result from resisting temptation.” When I started reading the stimulus passage “Controlling the global obesity epidemic,” I was instantly taken back to a debate my friends and I had about the impact of advertisements on obesity in children. Everyday children fall prey to the hundreds of food ads (“temptation”) bombarding the media, from social media to billboards. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the obesity rate in children in the US has tripled since the 1970s (“Obesity Facts| Healthy Schools| CDC, 2017) Inspiration for my research question was thus garnered as I truly wanted to find out if these commercials had any contribution to the rising number in child obesity. …show more content…
With their vulnerable minds, the colourful reds and yellows of commercials and the creative means used by companies such as winning a free toy with meals has resulted in children “eating French fries than green vegetables on a give day (“Many US children go days without eating any vegetable, survey finds”, 2017).
Upon further reading not only was my research question formulated but also a list of follow up questions which would help me get a better understanding of the impacts of advertising on children and the role it plays in child obesity.
