The majority of direct social work practices require clients’ confidentiality and informed consent. Demonstrating limits of confidentiality and informed consent are the introductory interview requirements as a social worker. Furthermore, maintaining confidentiality is an essential factor to build trusting relationships with the clients. During the interview, confidentiality was well-informed to the client. By additionally mentioning the limitations of the confidentiality, I provided a safe interviewing environment and the client was more relieved to discuss her concerns. Firstly, viewing different students’ communication style to clients helped which proper tone to speak and wording to use to closely engage with clients. For instance, Josh’s and Kenny’s conversation method caught my attention to keep in mind. Both of the students not only naturally led the interview by using their own communication tactic but also showed the value of professionalism as a social worker. After comparing their communication method to mine, I realized that my communication method lacked confidence which resulted not significant professional performance. Secondly, listening to other colleagues’ and the instructor’s feedbacks have navigated which adequate assessment tools to engage in different client situations. The most important part I learned from this exercise was highlighting more on client’s emotions and not leading the interview with content. It is definitely the social worker’s role to find what caused their emotion. When a client is expressing emotional feelings, social workers need to change the content to client’s mental state. Lastly, always not to panic or show fear in front of clients. Authenticity and professionalism are the two fundamental value required for all social workers. Deficiency in those two values will never build a trustworthy relationship with clients. Some students including me who lacked the previous values during their recording need to strengthen more
