I began to think more deeply about the situation and how it could affect the students who don’t end up learning how to think divergently. Digital stories are videos that allow you to get your voice out and display the raw emotions using pictures and sound. You are the driver to then viewer’s feelings when they watch your video. You are letting your audience in on a critical issue. Joe Lambert explains one of the main components to digital storytelling “Self-Revelatory – The stories feel as if the author is aware of a new insight that is being shared in the story, giving the story a sense of immediacy and discovery” (Lambert, 2013, pg. 37). Students are able to express their writing in a different way than the traditional essay. Digital stories are a simple way to get a story out; it could range in difficulty depending on the grade level. However, they are something even elementary students are able to construct or a teacher could construct for the students. Lambert mentions how digital stories require analysis, global and civic knowledge, communication, and team work. All these benefiting student’s education and preparing them for them for their future. There are many different ways to bring digital stories to the classroom. According to Lambert (2014) “… with the production of a multimedia story as the final assessment piece, provides a wide array of topics to explore” (pg. 135). Emotions in digital stories or any kind of stories connect us to the writer and as well as relating to their work. Emotions can also make us pity or sympathize with the writer and move towards moving past the issues. Readers become involved in the stories, “ambivalent stories, stories with no clear moral agenda, invite the listener to imagine themselves in the story” (Polletta, 2008). I feel that emotions should always be expressed especially in a writing class, where the air is so open to all types of writing.
