Major General Ulysses S. Grant implemented good mission command during the Siege of Vicksburg by creating a clear commander’s intent, accepting prudent risk, and exercising disciplined initiative resulting in the victory. Grant was appointed commander of the Department of the Tennessee in October of 1962. Almost immediately he began preparations for combined land and naval operations against the Confederate-held Vicksburg . Vicksburg was one of the last strongholds and was used as a main supply line to ship supplies to the Confederate Armies. Grant’s land force cut off the supply line from Jackson to Vicksburg before capturing the city.…
The South was under the command of General Joseph Finegan. The North was under the command of General Truman Seymour. Seymour troops were heading towards lake city to destroy a railroad bridge which would secure them that part of Northern Florida.…
They ascended to New Orleans and capture the city, closing off the the mouth of the Mississippi River, ascend to New Orleans and take the city. They closed off the Mississippi river to all confederate ships from the Gulf and from Mississippi ports still used by Confederate…
In addition, both sides used naval action as a highly effective method of capturing significant ports such as that of New Orleans in 1862. At this time, New Orleans fell into the control of the Union, in which the confederate forces faced a horrible loss by 5,000 men on their offensive. So overall, the Union was more capable of using this highly critical tactic to their benefit as the confederacy was weakened even more at sea, leaving them to rely on strong land forces to keep them strong against the enemy. In summation, the South was very restricted in their attempts to succeed at sea, as the north devised a well thought out plan to weaken the south.…
Individual: 1868- 1877 Andrew Johnson was the seventeenth president from 1865 to 1869. Johnson was the first president who had been impeached by the U.S House of Representatives. He was impeached because he didn’t respect the Tenure of Office Act. Susan B. Anthony was an abolitionist and women’s rights advocate. She was also the other founder of the National Women Suffrage Association in 1869.…
One example that Donald gives is the unwillingness of the soldiers to carry anything heavy and they would throw away equipment. The South did not have the luxury to leave behind any weapons and that played into the hands of having limited resources. Other…
The battle was a much needed morale boost for the Union as a whole and ultimately served as the defeat of Tennessee and the establishment of a major supply hub. The Union Army built the largest fortress of the war in Murfreesboro following the battle to secure the rail line. From there they stayed encamped until the summer of 1863 while rebuilding their force. The Confederates moved south to Tullahoma, TN and continued to be defeated and eventually pushed out of Tennessee. This allowed for the follow on push into the Deep South, to include General Sherman 's March through Georgia.…
According to T. H. Williams, the North won the Civil war because they “brought forward generals who were able to grow” and would employ new ways of war. Although Civil war generals trained at West Point together and grew up in the same establishment, some were more successful than others hence Grant and Sherman having the ability to adapt. In the Civil war, there were only three important generals: Lee, Grant, and Sherman. They were great leaders since they were mentally tough and did not care much for casualties since they were big in numbers. The greatest among those three was Grant due to his common sense since it made “him able to rise above military dogma.”…
This exactly was Sherman, and I bet everyone, was feeling after 4 years of fighting. In Document C the author states in lines 2 and 3, “... the only way the people in Atlanta can hope once more to live in peace and quiet at home, is to stop the war, which can only be done by admitting that it began in error and is perpetuated in pride.” In case you didn’t know what perpetuated means it’s when something is everlasting or never changing. So, by knowing this you can infer that Sherman wanted to just end the war, like most people at this time. And by feeling this way he felt that the best way to end the war quickly is by taking over Atlanta and then from there destroying everything.…
The South undoubtedly needed as much support as they could because they were against a region where industrialism and railroads were booming. Moreover, Davis’ intelligence is heightened even further because infiltrating the fort pulled the southern states together, which leaves the North to figure out how to…
In 1864, Union General William T. Sherman planned to take over Dallas to control the traffic on the county roads that led to larger cities such as Atlanta and Kennesaw (History). Confederate General Joseph Johnson commanded his troops to stop the Union from the attempted take-over. Three battles took place at New Hope Church, Dallas, and Pickett’s Mill. The battles delayed Sherman’s attack on Atlanta (History). Today, Pickett’s Mill is one of the best preserved Civil…
In the South, losing the war meant the abolishment of slavery. The stakes in the war increased heavily for both sides following the…
The two previous surrenders occurred at Appomattox Court House, in Virginia between General Robert E. Lee and General Ulysses S. Grant. The second and largest surrender was at Bennett Place near Durham, North Carolina. It was between General William Tecumseh Sherman and General Joseph E. Johnston. Sherman took no pity on Southerners.…
Sherman once blurted out to a fellow officer: "I am a damned sight smarter than Grant; I know a great deal more about war, military history, strategy and grand tactics than he does....” (Military Leadership of North and South) Sherman recognized that the Northern military leaders were smarter and knew what it would take to win the Civil war. The Northern leaders were smart enough to prohibit freedom of speech and other liberties to keep the soldiers obedient and disciplined. They won the war due to the superiority of the Northern leaders and their ability to suspend certain liberties, the advantage that allowed the little guy to win in the past, that the South…
In 1863, Grant (the Union general at that time) set up artillery to siege Vicksburg, a city on the Mississippi River. This prevented people from crossing or even coming close to the river and land. At that point, the Confederates were running low on supplies and they felt as if starvation was killing them. The Confederate soldiers couldn 't take the starvation anymore and petitioned to ask General Grant about terms for surrender. The defeat at Vicksburg meant a lot for the Union.…
