A recent article published on the USA Today website may have some answers. Mary Bowerman investigates the topic of having children before marriage in comparison to having children after marriage (2015). She expresses interest in the relationship of childbearing and marriage and their …show more content…
The researchers were using multiple regression statistics, which is used for predicting the relationships between variables. This means that there is a linear relationship between the three variables in this study. Researchers can use regression analysis to estimate the values of the criterion variable, which in this case is the risk of divorce. This statistical technique is useful, although researchers are not to use regression analysis to predict outside of their range of observed results. In order to use multiple regression statistics, the researchers had to assume four things about their data. The data must have been taken from a population that is normally distributed. The level of measurement for the variables must have been ordinal, interval, or ratio. There must be a linear relationship between variables that is homoscedastic, which means that the spread of the data is equal throughout. However, a strong linear or correlational relationship does not mean that there is causation, which means that the author cannot imply that a baby before marriage will or will not influence the risk of divorce. The author can only say that the variables of marriage before or after baby and the time period of childbirth have a positive or negative relationship with the risk of …show more content…
It’s easy for the audience to understand why the research was done and why the researchers studied women from two different time periods. There is a great interest in marriage and the seemingly increasing rates of divorce. Society is becoming more tolerant and accepting of the non-typical family, so research on this topic is applicable to the lives of Americans today. The design of the study was appropriate for the variables being studied as
