Basically, Hong Kong has a colonial history, it was occupied by the British army and then subsequently ceded to England as a colony in the mid-19th century. So in ESL countries, the British cultural influences keep on featuring deeply in Hong Kong cultural nowadays such as the English language.

In Singapore, English is their working language, their official languages are Chinese, Malay, and Tamil. This situation is smilier to Hong Kong as they are both ESL countries, so the English language for them will call “global language” as it is for them to access to the outside world of information and knowledge especially in business even politics or international relations. If those people want to enter the business, finance, or international relations, they have to achieve the business English study such as techniques on business presentations, negotiations, correspondence, writing and other skills needed for business communications, those communication skills in the workplace are indirectly increasing the ESL countries’ economic power. But to help those people in ESL countries to survive and thrive in this competitive global market, at least for now, English is always the common ground for them, companies must overcome the English language barriers.
