The Importance Of Literacy Narrative

A calming silence broods over the small room lit by the light of a computer screen on the laps of a girl sitting on her bed with her back against the wall. It’s 9PM on a Tuesday night, not just any Tuesday but the Tuesday before the Wednesday of her English assignment’s due date. She had been procrastinating, but tonight she’s going to try and finish it, not that she already started on it. She sighs loudly to express her stress, though ended up sounding more like a snoring pig crying for food. She has been sitting there just staring at her computer screen for a good ten minutes before opening up an empty word document that she had previously saved as “Literacy Narrative” three weeks ago when it was assigned. She checks the time again 9:14 …show more content…
How on this hellish earth could she ever write an a thousand words essay of her personal experience? Or at least that’s the gist that she got out of it as she didn’t completely understand what she should be doing. The girl then reread the sample literacy narrative provided by her professor, still struggling to understand the concept of what a literacy narrative is or how it should look like if she’s going to write one. Should she write in first person or third? The sample is in first person, but she had never been very good at writing in first person. It would sound too personal and would start to look like an entry from her diary that she kept in fifth grade. She starts typing and stopped at mid-sentence when a thought suddenly occurred to her, writing in third person would just look like she’s trying to write a story. That wouldn’t be good, she’s not trying to write a story, she needs to write a literacy narrative, whatever it may be. The girl taps abruptly on the delete key, erasing the few words of a sentence she wrote, regretting not starting on this assignment any …show more content…
“Good enough.” She told herself. She’s too tired to write anymore. She can’t write anymore. She’s out of thing to say.
“You know that’s crap, right?” Her consciousness says after a long silent. The girl is now leaning sluggardly in the corner of the room with her eyes just barely open staring blankly at her sun radiated computer screen. The girl didn’t answer, she already knew that, but honestly at this point she could care less about it. It’s late and this only what she have, might as well just turn it in for some credits.
“I am just going to patiently wait until you get your paper back and watch you cry.” Her consciousness said, in a tone of voice the girl can’t determine whether or not it’s sarcasm. The girl becomes agitated with her consciousness’ comment and starts to read her essay again, fixing the small mistakes she see along the way. After finishing, rather than the frown she had on when she first started, the ends of her lip stretches just a tiny bit toward her ears.
“What are you smiling about?” Her consciousness

Tamia Fluker’s Critique Professor Jaye gave his English 101 class an assignment to write a literacy narrative. The narrative’s objective was to discuss a time in one’s life that impacted their literacy growth. Tamia Fluker’s literacy narrative “A Day in the Life of a Reader” successfully met this objective. Although Fluker’s essay had a lot of positive areas there were a few areas in which she could improve.…

Campbell’s story revealed his strong persistence and patience in improving his literacy abilities. He met weekly with his English instructors to discuss writing issues and was the hardest worker in his English writing class (Streeter). He patiently listened to his tutors and instructors’ advices, followed their instructions and repeatedly worked on his English assignments, even though he had not reached his literacy sponsor’s requirements. As Campbell’s second semester writing instructor said in the article “I’m proud of you. You’ve tried as hard as anyone I’ve ever seen”…

The sidewalk beneath my feet has begun to erode away, pieces of rock and fragmented cement escaping onto the barren street. I think my reading has improved because I use better vocabulary and I can understand what I am reading. The reading strategies have helped me to become a better reader. I still rely on DJE, T2T like I did when I took basic reading as well. They are very helpful strategies that help me to read better and think about what I am reading. For this and other classes my goals are to understand what I am reading and being able to sum up what I read with very little difficulty.…

I never intended to be an illegal smuggler. Seriously. But when four-year-old me found out that preschool had "naptimes" (in which apparently nobody napped, making it a waste of time to me), I decided to take matters into my own hands, with drastic measures. The next day, my top-secret contraband came in with me, in the form of a book. At 1:30, while everyone else did whatever preschoolers do during naptime, the book snuck out of its carefully concealed hiding place and I disappeared into its pages.…

My goal is visual storytelling for print and digital that is content-driven, clear and easy to navigate. I accomplish this by collaborating and communicating with photo and word editors. This also requires staying up-to-date with daily news and being familiar with our newspaper's content. I often juggle multiple tasks during a design shift. In addition to my design responsibilities, I help make sure design desk schedules are accurate and posted in a timely manner, fix plotter paper jams, resolve digital issues, manage page flow, convert graphics to our style or correct them, provide detailed explanations of workflow issues, create illustrations and provide help to my colleagues when needed.…

I second all of the points brought up by Chris in his responce to your incredible writing. I was deeply moved by your literacy narrative. By simply having the pleasure of spending the past month or so with you, I would have never known about the part of your life that you wrote so passionately about in your literacy narrative. I often find it so intriguing that everyone has a story that resonates so deeply with him or her. That is exactly why I think large projects such as Humans of New York (HONY) or class assignments such as this one are so important.…

Does rejection or determination push you to go beyond the limits of what one expects of you? Most everyone would say it does, but does this only affect those of us who want to be writers? It definitely does not, nor is it limited to anyone of a particular language. People of different backgrounds, all have the same urge to learn something not entirely expected of them, even if it is just a different language. The writings of people, while very similar, have a great number of differences.…

Project #1: Literacy Narrative I remember walking across the lawn from our tiny add on classroom, up the stairs, and into the second grade class. What vivid moments do you experience when reading, writing, or activities that involved them? Or what frustrated you about reading and writing? My experience with reading and writing start with my teacher from elementary all the way up to my teachers in high School, Ripley, Tennessee school district, and University of Memphis.
