Mental health has a direct relationship with an individual 's physical health, and their ability to succeed in school, at work, and in society. Both physical and mental health affect how people think, feel, and act on the inside and outside (Children’s). There are many options available to help the mental health of children, but the help of a single individual could change the life a child forever. Counseling provided in schools not only tends to help the mental health of children but helps their academic outcomes as well (Slaten). Mental health issues are extremely common among school children (Kid’s). While the mental health of students across the nation often gets overlooked, one in ten children will suffer from a mental illness in their …show more content…
Learning disabilities, physical health problems, physiological problems, trauma, and family problems are destruct the mental health of a child. These causes can lead to further mental, emotional, and social health problems. These problems are more commonly referred to as a mental disorder and can often be painful and costly. They also create a huge, unneeded stress on the child as well as the family and school. Some common disorders include: ADHD, depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder (Mental). Anxiety disorders cause a person to experience excessive fear, worry, and uneasiness that interferes with their daily lives. Anxiety disorders generally occur along with mental or physical illnesses which often mask symptoms of anxiety or even make them worse (Anxiety). School administrations need to look into altering their systems to play an active role in the promotion of mental health and the well-being of students. In order to do this, they can train staff to provide attention for students who are considered at-risk. Studies show that teachers who show interest in their students on a personal basis begin to serve as a protective factor and critical support for any at-risk students. School administration and staff may also need to examine their practices and curriculum to develop school-wide systems in which students are able to be academically, behaviorally, and socially successful
