Motivation In Flowers For Algernon By Daniel Keyes

Imagine a world where there was no iPhone, or computer, and nobody had ever traveled into space, and there was no radio, or TV. Hard to imagine, right? You see, every single one of these items or accomplishments had to be thought through and carried out by people. Sure, the people involved in bringing these ideas to life were smart. But what really helped create these? Motivation. Motivation is the key to success With motivation, you can do anything you set your mind to and it doesn’t matter how smart you are, or where you went to college, or what your I.Q is. If you’re smart but you aren’t motivated then you are like a diamond that hasn’t been found. I felt proud when he said that not everybody with an eye-q of 68 had that thing.” (Progress report 4). You could be the smartest person in the world but if you don’t put your gift to use than it doesn’t matter. In the short story “Flowers of Algernon” by Daniel Keyes, Charlie uses his brilliance after the surgery to do scientific research on the mouse, Algernon, who had the same surgery as Charlie to triple intelligence. “The facts and result of my experiments are clear, and the more sensational aspects of my own rapid climb cannot obscure the fact that the tripling of intelligence by the surgical technique developed by Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur must be viewed as having little or no practical applicability (at the present time) to the increase of human intelligence.” (June 5). As this quote demonstrates, even though Charlie was only smart for a few months, he still didn’t waste his time or his talent and used his intelligence for the better of the scientific world. Even though what he was discovering meant that his intelligence was going to decline, that didn’t stop him from completing his research and staying motivated even though what the information he was gathering was hard for him to

Charlie went from being “retarded” from the beginning to some kind of genius throughout most of the book. The change wasn't instant, it took a little bit of time but the change was drastic. On page 1 Charlie couldn’t spell progress, then a while after the surgery, on around page 50, he spelled every single word correctly.
