United Nations Decade for Education for Sustainable Development, (UNESCO. (2008) supports this by stating that early year is when children develop core values, attitudes, skills and behaviours and habits. Which therefore supports the notion that in early years using a teaching resource such as the one presented in this portfolio can allow these certain characteristics to be developed that will enable children to use these skills in later life. It can be said that learning about sustainability in a group setting can allow the ability to gain a different perspective and discuss one 's perspective as well (About the Understandascope, 2013).
Being eco-literate is essential to children and is getting ever more important to understanding the environment. Being eco-literate according to Orr, (2004) is someone being able to comprehend the dynamics of the world, has a broad understanding of how individuals and societies work together and how individuals and corporations might work on sustainability.
Also to be considered is how DEEWR, (2009) supports sustainability education and how it is important for children to exposed to nature and natural materials in early years. Furthermore, DEEWR, 2009 also establishes a practice that needs to demonstrate in early childhood settings which are the learning environment, and it is explicitly mentioned that natural resources and also teachers need to allow optimal exposure in every aspect of the daily runnings.
