Schools are part of a community and due to that it is an organization. A social organization has its own characteristics and the common aspect of these characteristics is bureaucracy. It rules the organization in almost all the aspect of activities and therefore it is very important to understand the bureaucratic process to plan the activities to achieve the goals and the objectives of the institution.

Each individual has a role and a student’s role is to study while a teacher’s role in the school is to teach his students in his class. The role of the principal is closely related to the purpose of setting up of the school. These leadership characteristics or traits are crucial for a successful school. Mc Evan ( 2003), in his book “Ten traits of Highly Effective Principals- from Good to Great Performance” described ten traits of effective school leaders. A principal can also be evaluated based on how much he/she exercises those traits in the professional environment. The contingency theory of leadership behaviour, theory after the instrument developed by Fiedler (1967), to measure the effectiveness is the most well knows and empirically tested of the contextual or situational models. In this theory, leader effectiveness is view as a function of leader behaviour and contextual factors. Also another contingency theory model that created an impact on leadership theory was the decision- making theory. The model focuses on the extent to which staff should be involved in the decision making process. It propose that the degree to which staff be allowed to participate in decision making should depend on eh characteristics of the situation.
