For data collection, a questionnaire (Appendix A) was chosen. The questionnaire is a printed self-report form designed to gather information which are obtained through written responses of the subjects. The information gathered through a questionnaire is similar to that obtained by an interview but the questions tend to have less depth (Burns & Grove, 1993). The national athlete’s perception towards media, general knowledge, self-confidence, and environmental factors towards self-confidence during media interview were compiled from data collected with the aid of the questionnaires.

There will be conflicting response. The answers may not be the actual opinion of the subjects but something to please the researcher. In the process, necessary information may not have been found and responses are normally brief. The questionnaires were all closed-ended questions with options decided (Burns & Grove, 1993). Close-ended questionnaires are simpler to administer and anaylse. A respondent, in a given period of time, is able to complete more closed-ended questions than an open-ended one and it is considered more efficient (Polit & Hungler, 1993)
The questions were structured using the Likert format as it provided the respondents to answer the survey in an easy way. It also allowed the research to be conducted via a quantitative approach effectively with the use of statistics for data interpretation. Five choices – 1 (strongly agree); 2 (agree); 3 (neutral); 4 (disagree) and 5 (strong disagree) – are used in this survey format. The degree of agreement, from each respondent, represents their choice to the given question. There were 22 questions in this section. The questions were answered using Likert Scale 1 (strongly agree); 2 (agree); 3 (neutral); 4 (disagree) and 5 (strong disagree). The questions were asked mostly on their feelings during interview sessions with the media. According to Bandura (1977), self-perception and self- confidence contribute to an individual’s behavior of a situation.
Section E comprises questions related to the environment factor towards self-confidence during interviews with mass media. There are two parts in this section - 1) Physical environment and 2) Social environment. In total, 21 questions were asked in this section . All the questions were answered using Likert Scale 1 (strongly agree); 2 (agree); 3 (neutral); 4 (disagree) and 5 (strong disagree). According to Raevuori, Dick, Keski-Rahkonen, Pulkkinen, Rose, Rissanen, Silventoinen, (2007) , environment influenced the self-confidence in a person’s behavior during communication.
Section F, questions were asked more on the respondents’ opinion, suggestion and needs. There were five questions asked. All the questions were answered by ticking (X) in the box
