Qualitative Research: Close Ended Questionnaires

Superior Essays
For data collection, a questionnaire (Appendix A) was chosen. The questionnaire is a printed self-report form designed to gather information which are obtained through written responses of the subjects. The information gathered through a questionnaire is similar to that obtained by an interview but the questions tend to have less depth (Burns & Grove, 1993). The national athlete’s perception towards media, general knowledge, self-confidence, and environmental factors towards self-confidence during media interview were compiled from data collected with the aid of the questionnaires.
Questionnaires were opted for because of the following:

There will be conflicting response. The answers may not be the actual opinion of the subjects but something to please the researcher. In the process, necessary information may not have been found and responses are normally brief. The questionnaires were all closed-ended questions with options decided (Burns & Grove, 1993). Close-ended questionnaires are simpler to administer and anaylse. A respondent, in a given period of time, is able to complete more closed-ended questions than an open-ended one and it is considered more efficient (Polit & Hungler, 1993)
The questions were structured using the Likert format as it provided the respondents to answer the survey in an easy way. It also allowed the research to be conducted via a quantitative approach effectively with the use of statistics for data interpretation. Five choices – 1 (strongly agree); 2 (agree); 3 (neutral); 4 (disagree) and 5 (strong disagree) – are used in this survey format. The degree of agreement, from each respondent, represents their choice to the given question. The table below shows the section, variables questions measurement and type of data for the

There were 22 questions in this section. The questions were answered using Likert Scale 1 (strongly agree); 2 (agree); 3 (neutral); 4 (disagree) and 5 (strong disagree). The questions were asked mostly on their feelings during interview sessions with the media. According to Bandura (1977), self-perception and self- confidence contribute to an individual’s behavior of a situation.
Section E comprises questions related to the environment factor towards self-confidence during interviews with mass media. There are two parts in this section - 1) Physical environment and 2) Social environment. In total, 21 questions were asked in this section . All the questions were answered using Likert Scale 1 (strongly agree); 2 (agree); 3 (neutral); 4 (disagree) and 5 (strong disagree). According to Raevuori, Dick, Keski-Rahkonen, Pulkkinen, Rose, Rissanen, Silventoinen, (2007) , environment influenced the self-confidence in a person’s behavior during communication.
Section F, questions were asked more on the respondents’ opinion, suggestion and needs. There were five questions asked. All the questions were answered by ticking (X) in the box

The Childhood Cancer Survivor Survey constructed by the National Cancer Institute in 1993, they composed a retrospective piece of research into 14,000 ex-patients with 3,700 siblings. The conclusions drawn from the study inferred that the adults who survived childhood cancer, had the same positive psychological well-being as their siblings. Contradicting this, another report stated that adolescent survivors were 1.5 times more likely to have depression and anxiety in comparison to their siblings, and 1.7 times more likely to act out on antisocial behaviour. The majority of researchers carried out their investigations through the use of questionnaires, a self-report technique, therefore easily affected by subjectivity.…

One to one is good for small groups and individuals but has the disadvantage where individuals may be reluctant to criticize openly. Websites are anonymous and good for large organisations. In the study, the writer wanted to evaluate whether stressing the potential benefits of the hepatitis B vaccination was more or less effective than expressing the potential dangers of not getting the hepatitis B vaccination. In quantitative research, the data is structured, refined and generally based on numerical scales centered on closed-ended questions, objective in nature (p8.)…

considerations were limited in this study. Also, for a phenomenology approach, no observation was noted. Moreover, most of the events recalled by nurses were in the past, calling accurate memory into question. Analyzing the data was time consuming due to its volume. With the U.S. having the highest incarceration rates in the world, Americans are slowly inching towards realizing the effects of this and beginning to think about prison reform. Before any solid, concrete change is to occur, we need to be able to look at the different aspects of the criminal justice system which affects every single person in this country. We must be able to look at what leads up to someone being incarcerated (early life, family ties, social position), the legal proceedings and interactions with law enforcement. We need to be able to look at how people are being sentenced, and what “correctional” really means when it comes to using the term “correctional facilities”. We also need to look at why we have such high recidivism…

Researchers, Akos and Galassi developed a self-created questionnaire investigating students' perception of the difficulty of the transition, feelings of connectivity to school, and identification of adults or peers that aided in navigating the transition. This questionnaire was administered by homeroom teachers to all sixth-grade and ninth-grade students from one middle school and one high school in a southeastern school district. The sample derived demonstrated stratification by ethnicity and gender that was representative of the total populations of each of the schools. The data derived from the questionnaire was Likert-type data that was believed to be normally distributed.…
