Basically, a heart throbbing is another way of stating a heart beating quickly. A heartbeat occurs in 0.67-1 second (Simmers, 1988). Throughout that time, a cycle is already taking place. The cycle of a heartbeat consists of two parts: diastole and systole. It is during the diastole when the heart is most relaxed. The heart is not contracting at that time as it is filling up blood in the atria and ventricles. An electric impulse would be send to the heart in order to trigger it to contract. Reacting on the impulse, the left and right atria would contract the blood remaining into the ventricles. After several tenths of a second later, the ventricles would follow the atria and pump the blood into the body and lungs (“How the Heart”, 2004). In 1928, society coined the term heartthrob for those people whose looks can makes one’s heart throb. A heartthrob is the object of one’s infatuation or desire. It is the beloved of a person; a sweetheart. The term is supposedly for both genders, but it is usually used for men. In some case, this definition is similar to the other definition of a heartthrob.
