In this novel, passivity took over Janie, the main characters’, life immediately. She at first let her grandma control. Gradually, this becomes the norm for her character. She also has husbands, which control pretty much every aspect in her life. Though, in the end, she overcomes this passivity. Double-consciousness was a phrase coined by W.E.B. Du Bois in his novel The Souls of Black Folk and simply explains how African Americans feel like they function in America as well as being themselves, that there is a separation there.
