Many themes that occur in this story are self-discovery. In the beginning of this story shaymus doesn’t know who he is that’s why those motifs are correlated with it, but in the end he discovers that “It’s the oldest story in the world. One day you’re seventeen and planning for someday. And then quietly and without you ever really noticing, someday is today. And that someday is yesterday. And this is your life.” (Scott), and this quote reflects those motifs in the story as well as the first theme explored. The next theme that is explored is family. Family is a major part in this story. This family faces conflicts like the dad being different, his sister having to endure therapy and his family changing. Family in this story is a big part because of the vacation and the catastrophes endured during it. Those are the two themes represented in this story. Another is the conflict that shaymus is facing with himself. The conflict his sister faces with her mom which correlates to unfair treatment; which is self by authority conflict and shaymus faces self vs nature and self vs self.
