Often when you have a particular outlook to challenges, and approach problems with a certain personality, your outcome reflects your outlook. In the short story, “The Skeleton Key” by George G. Toudouze, the Narrator’s determination, logicalness, and positivity all contribute to why the he survived the attack. To begin, the Narrator has a good sense of determination. I still couldn’t believe it had been ten whole years since I had moved from this place, but I just couldn’t get the memories out of my head. I could still feel the classic Norvelt wind blowing across my face calling me out to come and realize that this is where I belong. Well, I guess it was correct because even, after all, I and my family moved to Florida things just didn’t seem to want to go right. Ghost Hunters The classic ghost story is shared around a campfire with frightened children, stuffing s’mores in their mouths, or on a candlelight tour around an old city (usually for a fee). When we tell ghost stories, we enter deep time, a thing so infinitely interconnected and complex that it becomes difficult to separate fact from fiction and past from present. Ghost stories emerge out of ignorance, revolve around dramatic irony and distortion, and of course, linger somewhere in the haze between truth and tale. Using these same qualities, Holmes and Woolf dive into deep time with their EMF meters to write the ghost stories found in The Age of Wonder and To the Lighthouse.…

There are many motifs that can be analyzed in ghost literature and folklore, though one that is ever present throughout the beginning of the telling of ghost stories is the motif of the suicide ghost. This ghost manifests after the untimely demise of an individual who takes their own life. This motif is intriguing, because of its complex nature and the fact that this motif persists through time, as it is seen in early ghost stories to the most recent accounts of ghosts. The suicide victim is often seen as returning as a ghost, because of the idea that these victims have unfinished business and internal turmoil. The suicide ghost motif persists because of the fascination of the premature death, along with the idea of understanding the internal turmoil one feels that leads them to take one’s own life and how that relates back to one’s own struggles.…
