I think two themes in. “The Longest Game” is respect and parental love. I think this is the theme because parental love is shown throughout the story, and so is respect. It is shown throughout the story because the mother respects her daughter enough to take her to the chess games. And you can tell the mother loves her daughter because she allowed her to do chess in the first place.
Parental love is shown throughout the story by showing the mothers relationship with her daughter. In the beginning the mother says no, but she changes her mind. This shows that the mother loved her daughter very much. She took her time out of her day to take her daughter to these chess matches, she also watched her, and gave her advice . I think this because the mother respected her daughter enough to give her time of the day. She also respected her daughter and thought that she was something. At the end of the story however, the mother loses her respect towards her daughter. The daughter had the mothers respect quite fast (she was her daughter however), but the mother also respected her daughter and the hobby of chess. She respected her enough to take her to the chess games, and she also watched. She could have just dropped her off and left, but she respected her daughter and waited patiently while she did her own thing. But just like the daughter had gained respect, she also lost it quite fast. In the end of the story you can tell that the daughter loves her mother, but she doesn't respect her entirely. I feel as if she saw her mother as a strong woman who always said no, I feel as if she respected her mom at the end of the story because the mother was strict, but as soon as the mom said yes to the chess, as soon as the mother gave the chores to the brothers, the daughter decided that she didn't have to respect her mother.
