Many countries, including those involved within the League of Nations, thought that appeasing Hitler by letting him get away with breaking the Treaty of Versailles would keep the peace, so nothing was done in the way of stopping him. The Prime Minister of Britain, Neville Chamberlain, in particular believed that by keeping Germany and its allies satisfied with appeasement instead of confrontation would prevent conflict between the countries, and therefore allowed Hitler to continue breaking the treaty without being opposed (Grant 2004 p.4). While Germany continued with its Anschluss ideal, the concept that all German speaking countries should be a part of Germany (BBC 2014), the League of Nations continued to allow it, resulting in Germany being able to conquer Austria and a portion of Czechoslovakia.
