Michael Joseph Jackson was a singer, songwriter, philanthropist and record producer. He was born on August 29, 1958 to a working-class home in Chicago, Illinois, the eighth of ten children from Katherine Esther Scruse and Joseph Walter "Joe" Jackson. Michael grew up with three sisters; Rebbie, La Toya, and Janet and five brothers; Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Randy. His sixth brother, Brandon, died shortly after birth. In 1964, Michael (at 6 years old) and Marlon (at 7 years old) joined the Jackson Brothers; a band formed by their father and which included brothers Jackie (13), Tito (11), and Jermaine (10); as backup musicians playing congas and tambourine.
