What are jati? The Aryans established the social classes in India. As such the social classes and who was included are Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors and aristocrats), vaishyas (peasants and merchants), and shudras (serfs). Brahmins in particular endorsed this social order, which brought them honor, prestige, and sometimes considerable wealth as well. Furthermore, in effect, the guilds functioned as subcastes based on occupation, known as jati. By definition, it is an Indian word for a Hindu subcaste. These jati, assumed much of the responsibility for maintaining social order in India. Jati regularly organized their own courts, through which they disciplined members, resolved differences, and regulated community affairs.
