The Morality Of Chris Mccandless

Chris McCandless died alone in the Alaskan wild while living completely off of the land. “Some readers admired the boy immensely for his courage and noble ideals:” while “: others fulminated that he was a reckless idiot, a wacko, a narcissist who perished out of arrogance and stupidity-and was undeserving of the considerable media attention he received” (Krakauer xi). These quotes represent the feelings of many who read Into The Wild, but most people ignore the important aspects of Chris McCandless’ personality and his self imposed purpose. Alex Supertramp was an interesting person with a unique mind, he worked hard and set high standards for himself. “It was like a moral thing for him. He was what you’d call extremely ethical.” being described as “extremely ethical” does not seem too common in today’s society, following a set of rules set to his own code of how the world should be is what allowed McCandless to live a peaceful life. The world was complicated, and McCandless would often contemplate many of the worldly issues, though he did not understand why the world could be so bad if there were ways to fix it. “Leaving the river for a day to track a herd of wild horses, he came across a sign warning he was trespassing on the U.S. Army’s highly restricted Yuma Proving Ground. McCandless was deterred not the least.” Alex was careless, but admirable in the fact that he did not always follow the rules. He roamed wherever he pleased and enjoyed the nature around him. But, eventually, Alex got a job in Bullhead and at one point considered ending his odyssey. He even listened to his bosses at McDonalds who told him he needed to shower more and wear socks, which he did not enjoy. From trespassing on U.S. Army territory to working a job at McDonalds, Alex was dedicated and interesting. However, he was not a fool, he was a well educated young man and he performed very well in high school and in college. Many question if he deserved the attention he got from his death. Even though he was a random man who died in the Alaskan wild, he was an important part of the lives of many and touched most everyone he met in his travels. He did hurt people like many have, but he also wanted people to be happy and he did not want the world around him to be in turmoil. Chris McCandless was a good person, and better than most; he donated money from his college fund to help people who were going hungry and he never understood racism. McCandless was not big on material things, when he was younger he informed his family that he would no longer accept gifts and stayed true to his word for remainder of his life. This action is commendable as most people today would never do this, and always want more material things. Chris McCandless would most likely view Christmas as a greed fest for people to get extravagant gifts of material things they most likely do not need. He did not like how people could be rich and not help others with their money. When he did use his car, he loved it and would never have felt the need for an upgrade because he bought it and it worked. He was resourceful and did not waste much.
