17. In my daily life, my generalized other helps me to get through the day. With “me”, I’ve learned that this part is the more rational side of myself. Whereas my “I” is the more impulsive side. Together they help to keep me sane and make decisions that will guide me through life. Even though the “I” does not really care what others think, the “me” makes it apparent to understand what is happening around me. I look to both as way to balance myself and shape who I am as a person. However, I’ve come to understand that my life is shaped by various “mes”. This is because it is based off of what others see me as. Their thoughts have in a way shaped how I see “me”. For example, in high school I was known as the dancer. In class, we had to take a twenty statements test. This test accentually ranked our identities from most salient to least salient. After taking this test it became apparent to me that I have more of a reflective identity and much less of an oceanic identity. Although I never put much thought into it, this is very prevalent in my daily life. According to our studies, the reflective self or identity tends to be one that is revealed in abstract statements, it transcends specific social roles or situations. From this definition, I can completely agree that I have more of a reflective identity. As a child I never understood the rules and roles placed on us by society. I always thought outside of the box. I questioned gender norms and religious beliefs. I also never understood the barriers that we as a society place on things like race. I always felt that we are all human and should live life based on the sole purpose of being good people. Based off of these beliefs I made it a goal to help people no matter what. I decided that I would be a supporter of human rights and I am working to become an advocate for child rights. As I continued to evaluate the twenty statements test, I noticed that my social and physical identities were very close together with only one point separating the two. Whereas my oceanic self was the least salient. It surprised me how much this test was relevant to me. I say this because my social self came before my physical self and in my life this is …show more content…
No matter who we are or what we do, everyone has a personal front. This front is usually made of three parts of the self that people may get to experience. These three parts are appearance, setting, and manners. In my daily life, this front is most prevalent at work. At the moment I work at both of the Pizza Huts here in Statesboro. At work, my appearance would be my first front. I have to wear a Pizza Hut hat, nametag and shirt as well as slip resistant shoes, unless I am working in the front of the store. If I am in the front of the store I can wear whatever shoes I like. With this look we as employees of Pizza Hut little to no originality, the most originality comes from our pants but even with those, they have to be either jeans, or shorts. This front is meant to look as uniform and professional as possible while still giving employees the chance to be comfortable. Wearing this uniform is a front used to please the company while letting customers know that I am an employee of the company. At work, I am not Iyanna, I am a worker and so my personal role is not present. In this aspect I have some control over my personal front. With my uniform I can customize my nametag to look pretty or I can make it plain with just my name. I can also mix and match my shirts and pants based off of how I feel. For example, on some days if my leg is hurting I will be more incline to wear jeans over shorts so that I can wear my compression sleeve under my jeans. However, I lack control

The most interesting part of Cooper-White’s book has to be the ‘Introduction to the Second Edition”. In it she outlines an interesting theory of identity as it relates to victimhood. Cooper-White refers to identity thusly, “I have increasingly come to the conviction that our subjectivity – our selfhood, or sense of self – is not unitary or monolithic, but multiple, fluid and contingent upon our relationships with family and friends, circles of community, and wider culture.” (Cooper-White 18) I also believe that selfhood is not archetypical, we don’t even exist on a spectrum. We exist on an array – we are the sum of disparate parts.…

“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

When I first met Zack, I didn’t think much of him at the time, until one day he initiated a conversation. From the conversation, the way he carried himself and his personality outshines from what I thought based on his appearance. There were hobbies that I could tell were his favorite, based on how he smiled whenever he was talking about them. He told me of his goals and just how he was talking about his goals made me believe that nothing will stop him from achieving his goals. However, Zack Mikat, my first friend I made at Davidson County Community College.…

It’s not always easy to appreciate the unconventional, but being different has been a strong source of my self-identity. It’s given me a sense of perspective and balance that shapes my view of the world. As a child of biracial parents, I’ve always accepted that I was multi-faceted. And even though there are ongoing racial divisiveness and a history in this country that is notorious for its brutality, I never felt its culture clash in my home. Every day I experience the beauty and harmony that comes from a seamless marriage of different perspectives, backgrounds and interests.…

My brother and I were never fans of sibling Halloween costumes, but if we had been, I’d say the most fitting one would be Peter Pan and his shadow. Cute concept, yes, but not to live. While it may not have been true in reality, I felt I was in my brother’s shadow ever since I can remember. My brother was that kid who got a perfect SAT, was at the top of his class, and got accepted to Stanford - a lot to live up to. As high school came around, I vowed to finally step into my own light, choosing to go to a different high school than he did, my first “adult” decision, but certainly not my last.…

Personal identity is a common philosophical struggle that humans face. What makes us who we are, and why are we here are two crucial questions we have debated over since the dawn of civilization. From birth, we are constantly gaining experience and knowledge not only to survive but also to create our own world-view. Even though we are complex creatures, we have a tendency to categorize the world around us into simple boxes. When a new topic is introduced which doesn’t already fit in one of our boxes, we are offset by this idea.…
