“ Dune” by Frank Herbert is an awe-inspiring sci-fi novel with a convoluted plot which gets deeper on every page. The writer utilizes various archetypes in this book to convey the plot of the story effectively. He uses archetypes such as the villain, the loyal soldiers, the hero, the epic journey, the platonic idea etc. One of the most prominent and most effective archetypes he uses though is the one of the hero’s aid. The hero’s aid is also a form of platonic idea in this book, which makes it much more effective. This archetype is fulfilled by Jessica. Throughout the book, Jessica guides Paul and tries her level best to protect him from evil. She also trains him in the ways of the Bene Gesserit. Herbert has extensively used this archetype in the book and constantly added faces to it, thus making it the most effective archetype in the book, second only to the hero. When Paul and Jessica confront the fremen after their escape from the harkonnen trap, Paul was able to kill a fremen because he had been trained in the arts Jessica had learnt.
