The NFL protest started last year when more and more NFL players began to kneel during the national anthem. It started with American football player Colin Kaepernick. The purpose was to highlight police brutality, racial inequality, and the Black Lives Matter movement. This has grown into a larger issue that even got President Trump involved, who basically said that “he wished that NFL players would be fired for kneeling during the national anthem”. Now, the controversial topic has a lot of media attention. Sports fans and citizens everywhere have mixed emotions. Some agree with the protest while others disagree with how it is playing out. This then got media and more politics involved after President Trump’s comments, which helped make this issue more known. Kneeling is also an action that is against the social norm. People usually stand when present in front of the flag or national anthem because it is part of American culture. Others also say that “not standing for the national anthem is an ineffective and counterproductive way to promote a cause”. They think there are other ways to prove a point without it disrupting sports. Some believe that sports should not be involved with politics. Another point brought up is that “refusing to stand for the national anthem angers many and sows division in our country”. Therefore, they believe kneeling during the anthem is a pointless form of protest that just shows disrespect.
