The Outsiders Symbolism

Sunsets are a very unique way to capture the idea of similarities between two concepts. However, when relating to The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, it is completely normal; in fact, it makes total sense. The novel includes two gangs that were constantly after each other--and not in playful ways. They were very violent and were always willing to hurt the other side; they completely despised each other. Those two gangs were the Greasers and the Socs, and they lived on opposite sides of town: the East side and the West side. However, the two gangs were complete opposites only when it came to their social classes. The Socs were very wealthy and the Greasers were very poor. However, when speaking generally and with the topic of life, they were all were people; they all went through hardships in their lives. They all could watch the sunset from each side of town--no matter what side of town they were in nor what gang they belonged to. Although the sunsets are a very unique way to exude this idea, they are very impacting as well. The two gangs were never able to realize how similar they actually were, which was eating the narrator, Ponyboy, up inside. He had wished for the two gangs to see how unnecessary the violence was. Ponyboy wanted them to realize that they should not hate each other since they are all the same. The hair oil represents the Greasers and the Mustangs, Corvairs, and madras represent the Socs. However, it was the symbol, sunsets, that represented their similarities. People are people; they are all the same. They experience the same things, and they all have feelings.
