The Pearl, written by John Steinbeck is about a pearl diver, named Kino, finding the most precious pearl, in hope that it will bring him great fortune. Unfortunately, the pearl brought evil upon Kino and his family. Many people plotted schemes to cheat Kino, or to steal the pearl from him. John Steinbeck applied family is good and greed is evil as the theme of the novel. The reason that led John Steinbeck to write the novel The Pearl, because he wanted the readers to know his concernment of life and living of poverty.
Throughout this novel, John Steinbeck was writing in a point of view of a poor pearl diver and show how music depicted if evil or goodness is presence. On page 24, “And the music of the pearl rose like a chorus of trumpets in his ears.” Through John Steinbeck’s choice of words, this shows that the pearl was presented as a good thing to Kino, believing that this pearl will bring him wealth. On page 62, “Now the darkness was closing in on his family; now the evil music filled the night hung over the mangrove, skilled in the wave beat.” Now at this part of the story, music was being used as an evil presence that had been drawn to harm Kino and his family. He heard this evil music after he saw a big hole in his grandfather canoe, that had been passed down to him.

On page 25 of the book, “Then to the lovely gray surface of the pearl came the little things Kino wanted: a harpoon to take the place of one lost a year ago…” This quote shows Kino’s desired of objects when he looks at the pearl. This shows the “American Dream” because of a person, who been surrounded by poverty, desiring many things. On page 26, “But Kino’s face shown with prophecy. ‘My son will read and open the books, and my son will write and know writing…” This quote shows how Kino wanted his son to go to school and get an education, because he owns the pearl that can bring any happiness to his
