Money and materialism can’t fulfill one’s happiness all the time. This quote shows us that money can’t buy someone’s way to happiness and neither can Kino’s pearl. In the book ,The Pearl, by John Steinbeck a poor fisherman named Kino finds the pearl of the world after his baby named, Coyotito is bitten by a scorpion. Soon, when Kino finds the pearl of the world the village people start to get very greedy for the pearl and its value. The author shows us how greed and materialism is working with the doctor, the pearl buyers, and the priest. The doctor is a character in The Pearl who is very different than other doctors. Most people think of doctors being nice, caring, and trustworthy. The doctor in this story is very cruel, racist, and greedy for money. He only helps people of his race and people with a lot of money. When Kino first sees the doctor without the pearl, the doctor sends his servant out to Kino and tells Kino that he will not treat Coyotito because they didn’t have any money. Once Kino finds the pearl then the doctor goes to Kino’s house and starts to treat Coyotito. He does this because he is very greedy for the pearl. When the news comes to the doctor he says, “ I am treating his son for a scorpion bite.” This quote shows us how greed is working with the doctor because he wasn’t treating Coyotito until Kino found …show more content…
Usually when we think of doctors we think of kind and caring people. But the one in The Pearl is very greedy and mean. Also when we think of priests we think of people that are also very nice and always thankful for you. Instead the priest in The Pearl is a very good priest, but when he hears about the pearl, he gets greedy and wants it badly.
