Many times without higher education people end up getting crappy jobs they don’t enjoy doing. These people are sometimes under paid to deal with the nasty attitudes of those they serve. This is evident through the two poems “People Who Take Care” and “A Waitresses Instructions On Tipping”. Higher education sometimes is needed to receive respect from those who we serve. In these two poems the speakers describe how people treat them and how much struggle they go through to stay employed at jobs they don’t like at all.
The speaker in the poem “People Who Take Care” feels unappreciated by the people she helps except for those who are helpless because they need help. Even though these people who help others don’t have higher education they are still working hard but those who make more money than them don’t recognize their hard work. The line “people who take care of people are not worth much except to people who are sick, old, and helpless, and poor.” (Henry 599) is a great example of how the people who are helping others are unappreciated. They are looked down at because others view them as uneducated people who can’t find better jobs.

These workers would rather provide for those who appreciate their efforts and not those who disrespect it. I agree with some of the points of these poems because I worked at a fast food restaurant and felt unappreciated by the customers I served. While working there I noticed that people tend to think those who work in fast food restaurants can’t do any better for themselves. People sometimes don’t appreciate the services that are provided to them, it is frustrating as a worker because often times I felt like I was helping people but they would thank me back with disrespect.
