White privilege is an inherent advantage, that is unearned and unacknowledged, yet practiced by whites regularly. White people typically earn more money and have more assets than other races. Fortunate individuals continue to fail to realize there is still inequality. They usually rise well above the poverty line, and live relatively economically sound lives. This is true for Brock Turner, a white male former swimmer and student at Stanford University.…
An extreme case dealing with unfairness and racism recently was the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement that is still prevalent. In this movement, you can see several opinions in the black community about how they are not treated fairly or in the same manner compared to whites. I believe as long as this ongoing mental war between races exists, there will not be a level where everyone can be at equilibrium. It is definitely not a matter that can be solved over night, maybe not even 10 years, but addressing that there is a problem that needs to be dealt with is crucial for understanding one another. After reading this article, it made me evaluate many instances in my past where a sense of invisible privilege may have come into play.…
In the article “What is a ‘System of Privilege”, sociologist and public speaker Allan G. Johnson explains how privilege, specifically white privilege in this case, works as a system. “Privilege does not guarantee good outcomes for the privileged group or bad outcomes for everyone else” according to Johnson, however, it does load the odds one way or the other. Unfortunately, social privilege is often invisible to those who experience them, claims Johnson. Johnson goes on to describe a few examples to validate his claim. For example, in a recent survey a group of volunteers were asked to close their eyes and picture a drug dealer.…
In Iris Young’s “Five Faces of Oppression” she discusses inequality, exclusion and oppression toward groups through the five faces; exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness cultural imperialism, and violence. Oppression means the practice of dominance by a ruling group. Oppression creates injustice in many instances throughout our society. It is the result of a groups choices or policies that create norms and habits in people’s day to day lives. Ultimately, oppression is when people make others feel less human.…

The idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts is a theme that runs through Salisbury's The Pronoun “I” is Becoming Obsolete, Hurley's The Perils of Pollution in Steel City, and Turner's American Individualism and Structural Injustice. The individual parts are often not able to stand alone, but together they form a comprehensive whole. Some groups are exploited, but the gestalt group achieves more together than they would apart. The majority and minorities can achieve more together than they would separately.…
White Privilege Overcoming Racism, an organization devoted to “breaking the cycle of oppression” defines privilege as the unquestioned, unearned, and most often unconscious advantage of one group. It consist of society, entitlements, benefits, choices, assumptions, and expectations bestowed upon people based solely on membership in a particular social group. In Short, unearned advantages. White Privilege is simply privilege for white people, and no. White Privilege is not white people being able to get in front of you in the Mcdonald's line or being able to step out in traffic while people of color have to stop and watch.…
In Allan Johnson’s article, “The Trouble We’re In,” he talked about privilege and oppression. Privilege is when one group of people has something of value and another group of people doesn’t have it, simply because it is denied to them. On the flip side, oppression is the social factors that are passed down to people and prevent them from having a good life. One of the social characteristics that I identify for myself is that I am a well-educated student. I have only ever attended private schools, from kindergarten until college.…
This not only falls into the category of oppression but also mass incarceration.…
What is privilege and how does it manifest itself? Privilege can be defined as a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people. Privilege has been manifesting itself throughout history. The most common type of privilege is given to us because of our gender, race, social class, age, sexual orientation, and disability. It can be hard for some people to come to terms that they were born with certain privilege that some people will never receive in their lifetime, while others may choose to ignore the realities of privilege.…
Each group experiences injustice in different ways, while seeking the same overall goal. As a white woman, the police will never stop me because of my skin color, nor will I be accused of stealing because of my skin color, nor will I be shot because of my skin color. I am a female, who is under oppression by men, NOT by a race. That is the difference. I am still privilege because of my skin tone.…
White Privilege and Difference It is invisible for most people. It is not discussed, taught or embraced. It is something most people dream about having on a daily basis. It is white privilege.…
When it comes to the topic of discrimination based on social and economic inequality, most of us will readily agree that higher classes people do not care about lower classes people and will take advantages of them. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how the lower classes people can be empower to protect themselves and also to gain equality. Though the outsiders argues that they are powerless to change their situation, and occupy wall street argues that people could fight for their rights by voices and actions, but both show that action makes changes. In The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton argues that for the lower class is hard to improve their lives.…
The text, Privilege, Power, and Difference by Allan Johnson, is a 156-page detailed account of Johnson’s views on American society and how social class, race, sexual orientation, gender, disability status, and privilege causes a “difference” in the way we view each other. Johnson’s personal views on how these factors affect the way members of the minority live and survive in current day United States is aimed at raising social awareness. The text, written by Johnson, identifies the social principles that form the belief of privilege and entitlement, often making jest at the very serious issue of inequality. This was a quick and easy read, yet was packed with valuable information and valid arguments. Johnson delves into American history,…
