Racism is something that has been around for many years. Many whites discriminated against colored people, but being a white person in a racist time like the book takes place, and being kind to colored people is extremely rare. Atticus Finch is one of the few people who isn’t racist, and believes everyone should be treated equally. Many can learn from Atticus Finch, and all the good he does for the people in Maycomb.
In to kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses atticus as a role model and leader in Jem and Scout's life. He teaches them morals and educational lessons by his actions, knowledge, and his view on the world.

Atticus demonstrates responsibility when he gives his reasons for taking Tom's case. This shows his character and morals. Many asked why he was doing this, defending a negro, and he would respond, "For a number of reasons,,,,The main one is, if I didn't I couldnt hold up my head in town. I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again." (pg 75). He knows what he has to do, and that it is the right thing to do and he knows that if he doesn't take the case that nothing else would matter because he was not fair in something he believes in. "The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying those resentments right into a jury box”(40). This shows what Atticus believes in, and that is that everyone should have a fair trial. Atticus is honorable when he says this, but an unfair jury can be destructive to justice. Atticus took the responsibility of his job and made sure that Tom got the best trial possible. By him doing this, shows Scout and Jem that color doesn’t matter, and everyone should be treated
