When life gets rough, people worry about who is going to be there to help them. In the novel the Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, Holden is trying to figure out what will happen to the ducks when their pond freezes. This is a great educational book that a large number of teenagers can relate to. However, many students haven’t been able to read because most school won't allow it. The book is about Holden Caulfield and his search for meaning and companionship. The author is uses the ducks in representation as Holden's future; they also show his growth in maturity throughout the book.

However, this time he get somewhat of an answer. The driver says “If you was a fish, Mother Nature's take care of you, wouldn’t she?”. This upsets Holden. He doesn't want to hear about the fish; he wants to know what happens to the ducks. Holden is an outsider in the book and is represented by the ducks. The fish represent everyone else besides him. The fact that he went out to find answers himself shows that he has gotten a little more mature. In his experience of searching for an answer for himself, Holden starts to realize it is up to him to do the right thing as an adult and can't always depend on someone being there to support him.
