More guys leave Unity than girls because they do labour jobs while women feel like they can’t do anything outside. women don’t have high school diplomas as they never went to high school so if they ever do end up outside Unity they wouldn’t be able to get a job. Females of Unity have limited knowledge of the outside due to restricted amount of information from anything outside of Unity. Celeste didn’t know about phones and other common everyday things outside of Unity. Females are discouraged to pursue work and their own wants. Celeste’s dad doesn’t take Celeste seriously when she says she wants to be a veterinarian. The community believes women should just have children, maintain the house and look after the kids while the men work. Unless it’s a special occasion women hardly ever leave Unity so they never have an opportunity to travel and see things as well as do things outside of their community. Celeste wanted to leave Unity but always felt like she couldn’t but after getting married to Martin and having a child she finally decides to leave for her child. Celeste doesn’t regret her decision saying “I’m finally free to think for myself”.
