Rosewood was predominantly a “black” town, with a couple of white civilians living in the area. The Rosewood massacre was a violent, racially motivated massacre of blacks and destruction of a black town. It was known that approximately nine people had died; 7 black and 2 white people were killed during the first week of January 1st, 1923. This massacre all started but a false rumor by a white woman of the name Fanny Taylor, who was trying to cover up an affair she was having with her husband, accusing a black man of sexually assaulting Mrs. Taylor in her home. This had begun of a racial tension within the small town of Rosewood. Many white men decided to go out and kill the man who was accused of assaulting Mrs. Taylor, and his suspected “accomplices” Aaron Carrier and Sam Carter. On January 2nd, 1923 200-300 white men from the surrounding areas or also known as the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) of Rosewood came to destroying the blacks and the Rosewood community. Many Blacks were lucky to escape with their lives during this time. On January 6, a trained had come to that the black “refugees” out of the horror of Rosewood and go to Gainesville to be safer. The blacks that were murdered were either hanged or burn on a stake during the KKK
