The Scale of Effective School Discipline and Safety (SESDS) Questionnaire indicates that Lacy Elementary is ready for implantation of a Positive Behavioral Support System (PBSS) in the area of Teachers’ Effective Classroom Management Skills. The analysis includes a scale ascending from 1-5 with “1” being excellent in regards to implementing a PBSS and a score of “5” being poor or not ready. Our analysis shows that Lacy Elementary scored an average of 2.2 in this particular section. This is an above average readiness for implantation of a new PBSS. 2.2 falls in the very good category as far as teachers feelings towards the particular area of PBSS being addressed within the school. This places Lacy Elementary in good standing according to the scale in regards to the implantation of a PBSS. Although the school is ready according the analysis it is indeed the category that scored the lowest according to the readiness scale. Consequently Lacy Elementary should put more efforts into the other 4 areas of SESDS first before moving forward. Further investigation shows that there are some glaring concerns in this category that must be addressed. Teachers agreed that there are some issues with respect amongst the student body and the students’ attitude towards the staff. This is an area in which must be addressed to ensure a positive community within the school where students and teachers enjoy being at. Another area Lacy Elementary data shows is that students are having to be disciplined in class resulting in interruptions to learning. An area the teachers agreed is of concern is that many discipline issues are referred to the office. This may be a lack of control within the classroom or a lack of understanding on continuity of procedures when discipline issues occur in the classroom. Furthermore teachers agreed another area of concern is equitable and consistent enforcement of the rules. The new PBSS would need to have clear instructions of step by step procedures in discipline procedures and all teachers requirement in participation in the system.
Scale 4: Teachers’ Contribution to a Positive School Climate In the area of teachers’ contribution to a positive school climate, Lacy Elementary produced an average score of 2.3. The staff at Lacy Elementary agreed in almost every category of being involved, cohesive, enthusiastic, satisfied, productive, innovative, open to change, and optimism. However, almost all teachers said that staff at the school is not relaxed. Implenting a solid PBSS will alleviate some unneeded stress as all teachers can be on the same page. When this occurs teachers will have the ability to feel more relaxed in the school.
