The reason being, a fear of crime associated with guns. However, gun control laws do little to stop overall crime. In fact, “according to the Congressional Research Service, there are more than three hundred million guns in America today” (Horsley). Of the guns in America, “many [are] legally owned and many [are] not” (Goldberg 2). It would be merely impossible to confiscate all guns owned if there were to be a nationwide ban. Banning individuals of their right to bear arms is also unnecessary as data have shown that the “Federal ban had little… effect on homicide rates associated with firearms and on gunshot wounds per victims” (Gius 266). Most people who legally own guns know the dangers and follow extreme safety precautions. It would be unfair for people who safely use their legally owned firearms to have their right taken away. Individual possession of firearms may even prove to have benefits because “states with…concealed weapons laws have had lower crime rates than states with restrictive gun laws” (Gius 266). Most people feel safer when they have their firearms to protect them and criminals are less likely to attack someone that may have a powerful weapon to protect themself with. There is a belief that guns are only to kill people, but for numerous Americans, guns are just a part of the culture. Lots of people grow up safely using guns their entire lives. Guns can be a means for violence or a sport. The American people should have the right to decide whether they want to have firearms because it is their individual
