The lack of emotional connection is shown by the description of Gregor’s room in the novella, “..little too small..four familiar walls.”(11) It is also described to be empty and minimal. It only contains his basic necessities and a picture frame of a “lady who, decked out in a fur hat and a fur boa.” (11). This emptiness in Gregor’s room can imply that the room is more of a resting place rather than a room, an individual’s sanctuary. The emptiness also shows the lack of attachment to the people and his surroundings. The room shows no sign of memories or past events. With no memories collected from the past, it is evident that Gregor lacks emotional connection. The lack of information from Gregor’s past implies that there is nothing worth remembering from his past because the author does not talk about Gregor’s past after he went through his metamorphosis. The past is known to be an anchor of the present and the future and it represents the identity of each individual. This aspect shows absurdity in Gregor’s past life and how meaningless it is until he does not mention anything about it.
