Christopher Paul Curtis is a children’s book writer. He is renowned for his Newbery Medal-winning book, Bud, Not Buddy and for his book The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963. The Watsons go to Birmingham was a book filled with adventure and suspense as readers read about a family going to Birmingham for the summer during the Civil Rights Movement. The house they lived in was very cold, so they had to huddle up together to stay warm. While they were huddled up, the father told his family a story of how he almost lost his wife to Moses Henderson (wife’s old boyfriend). Awhile after the father called Aunt Cydney because he wanted to know if the family could spend the night. After that the father calls their grandmother to ask if they can come to Alabama for the summer. Soon after the father bought new things to fix the car. Momma finally tells everyone that the reason why they have been fixing the car. She tells the family that they will be traveling to Alabama. On the way to Birmingham the Mother and Father explained the segregation that occurs in the South. In the South, Blacks we’re treated less than those in the North which meant that they were restricted from going to places that white people occupied. On top of that there were hate groups. In Alabama strange things occurred, when Grandmother tells Kenny about the wool pooh (whirlpool, her southern accent cause the word to sound like that). Kenny became scared for his life because he thought the wool pooh is a person. Later that week on Sunday Kenny woke up to hear Joey getting ready for Sunday school. Soon after Joey left for church, Kenny heard a loud noise. He wanted to ask his Mom and Dad what the noise was but he realized that they are gone. Kenny heard his mom scream, so he quickly asked Byron what happened. Byron then told him that someone dropped a bomb on the church where Joey, his sister, had
