The Armenian Genocide was the first genocide in the 20th century. It was a cruel event much like other genocides, but this particular one killed an estimation of 1,500,000 people. Armenians were blamed by Turkish for partnering up with the Russians during World War I. The consequence for the Armenians resulted in being forced to give up their weapons; Also those that were in the army were killed or put into slave work until they died. The Turks would find any way to get rid of the Armenians.…
After the Ottomans surrendered in 1918, the leaders of the Young Turks fled to Germany, which promised not to prosecute them for the genocide. (However, a group of Armenian nationalists devised a plan, known as Operation Nemesis, to track down and assassinate the leaders of the genocide.) Ever since then, the Turkish government has denied that a genocide took place. The Armenians were an enemy force, they argue, and their slaughter was a necessary war measure. Today, Turkey is an important ally of the U.S. and other Western nations, and so their governments have likewise been reluctant to condemn the long-ago killings.…
The United States is the number one strongest military power in the world. There is no power in the world that can stand the military might of this nation. With this military strength, any conflict could be solved quickly and cleanly… or could it? AS of current, there is a conflict going on the Middle East involving the Syrian Civil War, which is a war currently between syrian nationalists, the current corrupt government, and the terrorist group ISIS, along with the whole crisis being used as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran (“Syria”). All of that, plus the massive influx of syrian refugees that are currently bellowing into europe, and this crisis is one that is one that could affect the shape world for years to come.…
The topic that I have chosen to research about is the Holodomor Genocide. The Holodomor was a man-made famine in the Ukrainian Soviet Republic in 1932 and 1933 that killed an estimated 2.5 million to 7.5 million Ukrainians. Under the rule of Joseph Stalin, this was done to teach Ukraine’s independent farmers “a lesson they would not forget” for resisting collectivization. Which meant giving up their land and livestock to the state. People were dying at the rate of 30,000 per day and at least 4 million of the counted deaths were due to starvation.…
The Armenian Genocide was very similar to other cases of human rights violations because factors such as scapegoating were followed by dehumanization. From the beginning during the Ottoman Empire, Christians were discriminated against as they paid higher taxes than Muslims. During World War I, Armenians were scapegoated because of their Christian beliefs, which supposedly influenced their loyalty to their country. Similarly, in the Holocaust, Hitler blamed the Jews for all the economic problems in Germany; Jews were considered to be disloyal and naturally took advantage of other people. In both incidents, the leaders of the countries wanted to purify or cleanse the country of people they considered to be different and disloyal.…
As citizen’s of a modern society, it is our responsibility to acknowledge the disturbing actions of our past, avoiding ignorance in order to preserve peace and prevent future loss of life, therefore, it is crucial that the Armenian Genocide should be recognized by everyone as premeditated genocide. In the shadow of World War I, one of the world’s first systematic genocides transpired within the Ottoman Empire. From 1908 to 1922 the Turkish government arrested, executed, and deported over 1.5 million Armenians, following a premeditated and systematic campaign to exterminate the entire people. The decline of power in the Ottoman empire coupled with the fear of domestic conflict had provoked new government, the Young Turks, to idealize an exclusively…
The Mountain Turks? The conflict between the Kurds and the Government of Turkey is lasted for almost three decades. This war has claimed the lives of more than 40,000 people, and most of them are Kurds. After Ottoman Turkish Empire collapsed by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, he gave his word to the Kurds that he will granting them self-rule in their region, if they supports him in establishment of what we know today as the Republic of Turkey.…
The Ottoman Empire was a multinational state with in inclusion of Armenia. The Armenians were considered as second-class citizens as they were culturally distinct from the Turks. The Empire’s practicing religion was that of Islam, whereas the Armenians were the first state to adopt Christianity distinguishing it from its neighbours. Armenians had always been the most educated community within the old Turkish Empire. They were the professionals in society, and were open to new scientific, political and social ideas from the West.…
Finally, an end to a long era on October 30, 1918, the Ottoman Empire surrendered. Shortly after Turkish citizens who were involved in this genocide quickly escaped to Germany. This escape did not last long as the Armenian banned together and formed a group called the Armenian Nationalists. This group tracked the Turks involved and assassinated them themselves. Post genocide, approximately 388,000 Armenians had remained in Turkey, however, violence continued to occur until 1923.…
This conflict, carried out between the Sudanese government and rebel Darfur forces, is a serious world problem that desperately needs attention. It has been called the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, and the United Nations has predicted that, as of today, more than 300,000 people have been killed as a result of it (Darfur Conflict). Even with all the suffering and bloodshed, Darfur currently has very little international aid and no visible end to the violence. By studying the history and current status of the Darfur Genocide, as well as the efforts being made…
Hardworking citizens that spend their whole lives trying to make the world a better place for their families are stripped of everything and everyone they love dear due to their beliefs, ethnicity, or what nation they belong to. Genocide, although commonly practiced has been frowned upon by every nation, including the nations that continue to murder innocents every day. The atrocities that occur during the mass killings are often looked over as people would rather see the bright side of life and not focus on what they did to their fellow human beings. These genocides can be traced for thousands of year, moreover, these callous killings will not cease to exist anytime soon no matter how much they should. The most well known genocide is the…
Part of the peace process that began in 1991 required an investigation on the killings of civilians, particularly the supposed genocide that had taken place with the purpose of eliminating the Mayan population. Through the Accord of Oslo on June 23, 1994, the United Nations with the cooperation of the Government of the Republic of Guatemala formed the Commission for Historical Clarification (CEH) in order to “clarify with objectivity, equity and impartiality” the acts of violence and potential human rights violations connected to the armed conflict in Guatemala (Laura Powell, 2013). Much of the problem was on the fact that there was no written documentation that a Mayan genocide had been order. There was evidence and testimonies that mass killings…
The cultural genocide at the hands of the Indian residential school system along with historic and present day oppression and abuse is a blood stain on Canadian culture and government. The government has made steps to atone and reconcile for the destruction it brought upon the First Nations community, however, I do not think enough has been done or ever will be done as long as the oppressor’s government institution is in place. It will ultimately be left up to the First Nations people to come together as a unit to rebuild the structure of their community. Indian Residential School System The Indian residential schools (IRS) were domestic terrorism hubs and locations ordained by the Canadian government and churches which were operated and enforced…
Further, displaying how the invasion of Iraq cannot be an example of humanitarian intervention. There are central increasing tensions between international Law and the United Nations, as the UN revolves around a dual responsibility, to uphold human rights of the persons and to uphold the sovereign rights of the state. It has caused issues surrounding humanitarian intervention, which creates a question, to whether the UN security council, including; the U.K, USA, France, Russia and China, should be the final decider to whether one state can use force on another state. By definition, humanitarian intervention overrides the responsibility to promote and defend sovereignty. So the regime in the state is no longer sovereign, once that state has begun mass human rights…
Introduction There are a lot of issues about human rights that happened in the world. It can be racism, social-class position, or murder. Yet, the most human rights issue that makes countries in the world paid attention recently is about people who murdered by terrorists, especially ISIS. ISIS itself stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, which is a terrorist organization and purposefully want to make the middle-east countries as well as all the countries in the world became an Islamic area (Pusaka, 2014). That organization always captured and killed people in order to get the world’s attention and want to make some countries scared of ISIS.…
