Stop! Do not throw away that blue sweater just because it is starting to look worn out. Washing your favorite throw overs can cause them to look worn and shaggy with fuzzy lint pulled up over time. That doesn't mean those throw overs are now to be thrown away. Possibly the best advice Wengie could pitch our way is taking an average razor and shaving your sweater.…
There are issues that accompany civilization, one being male dominance. We have updated our train of thought into a more tolerant society and came to an agreement that women are as capable as men. Still, women live under societies’s and men's shadow that has been casted for centuries. Brent Staple’s essay “Just Walk on By” addresses the the power men have over women, referring to it as “male romance with the power to intimidate”(pg.).…
Gender roles seem to have been written in stone from the beginning of time, wherein men are expected to remain resourceful leaders who arrange and execute decisions, as well as provide for their families. Women, on the other hand, are expected to obediently listen to their husbands and nurture children and cook for the family. These roles, however definite in the 1900s, shift between genders as circumstances grow demanding and difficult in John Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath, following the Joad family’s arduous journey to California during the Great Depression. As the Joads elude the dry devastation in Oklahoma, an apparent displacement of authority in the family arises, revealing the ideal adaptive and survival capabilities…
The human race is over 200,000 years in the making, and we still struggle with treating women as someone who is equal to men. Sexism is not hard to find look around. It is probably happening right now. Women experience some type of sexism at least once a week, if not on a daily basis. No one is born a sexist, people are taught to be sexist.…
“Women’s Studies: A man’s perspective” offers a thoughtful and insightful viewpoint of the tribulations that may be encountered, and the advantages that may be acquired, as a result of participating in a women’s studies course as a male. Although Evan Weissman received support on his decision to complete a women’s studies course by several of his closest loved ones, others mocked him and questioned his confidence as a man. Many of those that insulted him lacked the ability and competence to recognize the positive outcomes a women’s studies course could provide. According to Weissman, most men are oblivious to the advantages and dominance they possess over women. Through women’s studies, Weissman was able to develop a strong sense of confidence in himself, and realize that the attainment of his goals was, in part, influenced by his gender.…
"Once upon a time, it was a man’s world,” states David Brooks firmly. For centuries it has been understood that men rule over the more important dominant and power positions of the world. From great male pharaohs, to an increasingly systematic view of presidency, men have been able to manipulate genetic gender roles in order to instill the notion that it’s truly a world only able to stand with the leadership of men. However, contrary to the beliefs of the gender based roles of conduct in society, that represent males as supreme in intelligence and in physical dominance, we have evolved into an era where woman carry an equivalent and sometimes ever greater capacity to strive for success than ever before over men. To begin with, no longer…
You Think Your Life is Difficult? In his essay “The Men We Carry in Our Minds,” Scott Russell Sanders explains his perspective on the relationship between gender roles and social class in both men and women. Sanders argues that individuals create opinions and prejudices about the gender roles of men and women based on their own personal experiences. In the majority of his essay, Sanders effectively uses the appeal of pathos to gain the sympathy of his readers towards the struggles men face. However, many of Sanders’s claims are incomplete and unfair.…
In Missoula by Jon Krakauer, with the heavy presence of the community adoration for the local football team and the sexual-assault crisis that ensued, gender inequality is a significant problem that mainly affects young women in this community. The young women in Missoula, Montana face inequalities in the ways females are seen as biologically different than males and thus inferior to males, the ways in which they were socialized as a female compared to how males are socialized in the community, and the ways their claims of sexual-assault are perceived by the community and police department. The gender inequality present throughout Missoula and in the town Missoula reflects a community and a society displeased with and untrusting of females, resulting in the treatment of females as lesser than males and no sense of protection or concern for these seemingly non-worthy women. Men view females as inherently unequal and inferior due to their biological differences and believe that these biological…
The Mental Health of Men Introduction Throughout history, men have been seen as superior in all ways to women, and this harmful stereotype still plays a role in today’s society. However, it wasn’t until recent times that the idea of mental disorders and health has been feminized and men’s mental health has largely been ignored (1). When referring to mental disorders and health, this is an encompassing term that refers to both affective and behavioral disorders that are patterned in both men and women (1). Although there has been some debate throughout history about empirical mental differences between men and women, it is proven that both sexes are capable of being diagnosed with the same mental disorders. Male and female victims…
Moving from North America to Africa, Jacqueline Novogratz explores the struggles of African women living in poverty. In her book, The Blue Sweater, Novogratz narrates her mission to provide women with the opportunity to better themselves. While reading Novogratz’s gripping highs and lows on the beginning of her path to success, several points of her mission caught my attention. The first being the tagline of her autobiography, the second being the system of lending that the women figured out amongst themselves, and the final being the fact that gender inequalities exist across many different cultures.…
The topic of this paper is about how sexism in almost all major religions affects today’s contemporary views. My paper will focus on Hinduism and Christianity in particular. Although both religions do show sexism, they also show equality or a high status for women. So why is our society today still indulged in sexist religious thoughts instead of analyzing all the information? This paper will discuss both the sexist and nonsexist views in the religions.…
#1.) There are many ways that gender can be defined and experienced. In our first class discussion, we examined how gender can be an identity, expression, expectation, and an attribution. Kate Bornstein addressed these terms in “Gender Outlaw.…
“Status inequality is a system of inequality that is founded on cultural beliefs about status difference between types of people” (Ridgeway 2011:156). When a woman acts in these ways, others may reciprocate the masculine identities. In interaction, these characteristics of women make them “more dependent on men by virtue of expressing positive characteristics, ultimately positioning women as inferior” (Wade and Feree 2015:148). The traits associated with women need counterparts to be justified, which are qualities associated with masculinity. A woman may be praised for a petite frame, but it also puts her at risk for less physical defense.…
In the article “Is Female to Male as Nature is to Culture?” Sherry B. Ortner discusses how females are associated symbolically with nature and males with culture. The article supports the notion that male dominance is universal. Written in 1974, this was a very popular idea among Feminists in the 70s. The author explores this idea in her structural gender analysis of cultural female devaluation.…
Introductory Paragraph A. The actuality is that our society wants to gender inequality. Our history has shown that men want to be in control of everything. We place gender specific roles on male and female because our long history of men dominating can’t be easily replaced. In many countries around the world, including the United States of America, we question and raised concerns about a women’s place in male dominated world whether it’s a work place, at home or in public.…
