Is John A Good Husband

In the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the main character is a young mother who has some mental disorders. Her husband’s name is John, who is a physician of high standing and repute. By modern standards, John is a good husband who has to overcome unique struggles to love and care for his wife and child. John does love his family because he makes a living for his family, goes out of his way to care for her, and just based off the story we cannot really conclude much of the moral ground on which he stands on. To begin with, John has to make a living for his family, despite having to deal with multiple other stress factors at home. The narrator mentions he is gone throughout the day and because of her psychological issues, he is forced to lock her up in a room. She states in the story, “And I am alone a good deal just now. John is kept in town very often by serious cases.” While at first this quote may appear to have a negative connotation, John’s intentions are not malicious in this aspect, because he probably does not desire to lock her up, in fact, he most likely has an internal struggle every time he leaves her in the room. He works hard to do his best to keep his family safe and happy, even with all of the unique challenges he faces. “The Yellow Wallpaper” is an easily misconstrued tale from the perspective of a psychologically disabled, young mother and her increasing insanity and paranoia of those around her. One should always review a situation from multiple standpoints to get an idea on how others perceive it themselves. Only then, does one truly have the necessary information, to correctly evaluate a situation. In this case, as far as one can tell, John is a good and devoted
