The United Nations played a prominent role in the holocaust depicted in the film. The UN peacekeepers helped Paul to protect the hotel and the refugees from the hostile Hutu militia after their own refugee camp had reached maximum capacity. The UN peacekeepers could have certainly provided more assistance to the refugees had they been allowed to use their guns, but in the film, they still ended up being an important asset in the fight for refugee safety. Another organization that played a major role during this time was the International Committee of the Red Cross. In the film, one of the doctors from the Red Cross helped to get several orphaned refugees to safety and later helped to reunite Paul and his family with their two nieces. Later in the film, some of the refugees had been brought to the Tutsi Rebel camp where they were offered food and shelter as well as medical care provided by the Red Cross. Tatiana wears a cross on a chain which is a common symbol of Christianity. One of the main goals of European imperialism was to spread Christianity and it is evident through this detail that Christianity had certainly made its way to sub-Saharan Africa. Religion is not expressly mentioned in the film, but it is known that Belgium is a predominately Christian nation, so it is very likely that when Belgians were heavily involved in Rwanda, they were able to introduce and convert a great number of Rwandans to Christianity. Overall, Europe’s rapid expansion and colonization had tremendous effects on various nations throughout the world. The film Hotel Rwanda is a depiction of what sort of large-scale effect imperialism had caused one small African nation. Europeans were responsible for igniting the hatred between Hutus and Tutsis thus causing the genocide.
