There were many different themes expressed in The Scarlet letter, but the theme that kept recurring was sin.All of the main characters in this book are sinners, and a sin is the act of doing wrong. Both Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale's sin was Adultery. Roger Chillingworth's sin was seeking revenge on Dimmesdale after he had an affair with his wife.
In the beginning of The Scarlet Letter Hester Prynne is married to Roger Chillingworth. Chillingworth sent hester to America, Chillingworth said he would meet her there. While waiting for her husband Hester had an affair with a puritan minister. She then had a baby girl named Pearl. Hester has committed adultery and now has to wear a red A on her chest to show the community her sin. All the Puritans show antipathy towards her and her baby, but hester disregards them and says the A has made her who she is and accepts that she will wear for the rest of her life.
Arthur Dimmesdale is the Minister of the town. Dimmesdale for some reason will not confess to the public that he is the father of pearl. Since he does not reveal this to the community he tortures himself physically. Dimmesdale also has to wear an A too by this is not visible as much as hester. As the reader you can tell this because he is always holding his chest.

Heater was put in prison for her sin and had to wear the letter A on her chest. Even though Dimmesdale never physically showed that he committed adultery he confessed to everybody about it. Finally Roger Chillingworth's sin was revenge for Dimmesdale.The reason why sin is the most suitable theme for The Scarlet Letter is because all the main characters can connect to it.
