Suicide In Celeste Ng's Everything I Never Told You

Suicide is the act of causing one's own death. According to dosomething.com, “Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for 15 to 24-year-olds and 2nd for 24 to 35-year-olds”. Through the use of Lydia's death and the Lee family's reaction, The book Everything I Never Told You, by Celeste Ng shows both the reasons for a young person's suicide and how the act affects the people closest to them. Additionally, throughout the book, the youngest daughter Hannah is a background character who is shown to be nearly invisible and forgotten to the rest of the family. As is the situation with many younger siblings, Hannah does all she can to get her family's attention. Consequently, while Hannah tries her best to keep the family together, she actually causes the family to collapse in such a drastic way because she enables the family's problems to build up to a point where she is unable to hold them back alone, causing all the problems to crash down at once.
Hannah uses her invisibility to covertly defend the family from itself because she is the only one who can see the defective qualities of the household. During an argument between James and Marilyn, “Hannah squirms… Her parents don't notice, In fact, they act as if she isn't even there” (107). Hannah is able to be nearly anywhere in the house without being noticed, and neither movement nor looks of discomfort change that. Hannah uses her invisibility to listen in on things happening
