She knits the names of anyone that is against her cause and these people are eventually hunted down and slaughtered in gruesome ways. Madame Defarge also fights Miss Pross, who is attempting to transport the Manette’s safely to England. The two women are each others foils and use polar opposite weapons to fight each other. Madame Defarge arrives to where the Manette’s were staying with a pistol in her bosom and a sharpened dagger at her side, while she is meet with Miss Pross’s weapons, courage and the love for the Manette’s. Madame Defarge, a blood thirsty woman seeking revenge for her abused family, ultimately dies as a result of her own violence (Gonzalez-Posse 1). Jerry Cruncher, a man of many jobs, possesses a different type of violence: Domestic violence. Jerry Cruncher constantly scolds his wife for praying because Cruncher perceives praying as an act against him. Also, he throws many items at his wife including a rubber boot covered in mud. Jerry Cruncher’s violence is not as extreme as The Evrémonde’s or Madame Defarge’s but, domestic violence and women 's oppression is still a great deal in A Tale of Two Cities. Maria Gonzalez-Posse, a Bloom’s Literature writer, believes “Miss Pross’s valiant effort, along with Carton’s sacrifice as he trades places with Darnay at the guillotine, are presented as the only acts that are capable of interrupting the cycle of violence in A Tale of Two Cities.”
A Tale of Two Cities contains countless violent symbols, including the sea, the Carmagnole, and the guillotine. The readers are introduced to the sea in Book Two, Chapter 21 where the Defarge’s storm the Bastille in hopes to find 101 North Tower, Dr.Manette’s cell. The sea, presented as “ ..destruction. It thundered at the town, and thundered at the cliffs, and
