Salinger's purpose for including Holden’s dream job is to show Holden’s false sense of reality as well as how his past experiences lead him to his conclusion on innocence.

He saw the effect it had on him and did not want others to experience the same thing. Allie’s death was the price Holden had to pay to be the catcher in the rye.
In terms of his emotions, Holden did not hold back in expressing how he felt. That night, “I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it.” He did this in an effort to gain attention from his family and show them how upset he was about the death.
