During Wayne Grudem’s visit to Biola University in California, he spoke on what is perhaps the least discussed topic among Christians; theology in business. In an amiable manner, Wayne began to introduce point after point of support for his main premise, that, “the bible views work in a positive way” (Gruden, 2014). Wayne uses many biblical references to support that, “God views work as the moral good.” (Grudem, 2014).
God Commands us to work. Work will be a part of the world until Jesus returns. Proverbs 12:11, “Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.” Work was a part of God’s creation from the beginning, as Adam enjoyed to work with in the …show more content…
“God built times of rest to give us structure in our lives” (Grudem, 2014). Most Christians today see the wisdom in taking regular times of rest from hard work. Grudem argues that doing so would be a direct reflection of God, when “on the seventh day he rested from all his work”, Gen. 2:2. Upon his third reason for rest, Gruden states that frequent periods of rest allow workers to enjoy what they have accomplished. In the business of work, it is all too easy to never appreciate how far you have come along in a project. Taking a day of rest allows you to appreciate what you have done, and get excited about the future. 1 Timothy 6:17 “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.” How can we ever enjoy what God has given us without a time to rest? U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman, an observant Jew who has long honored the Sabbath, stated that the Sabbath has “meant a lot to my family and my peace of mind” (Altimari, page …show more content…
This is the last point that Grudem decides to end his lecture on as he comes full circle from his first point. This is very hard for Christians today to accept, as we see so much corruption and dishonesty in corporate America. However, work and business was intended by God to be wonderful. Just like so many areas of life, what God intended for good, man turned into evil. In the book, Good Returns: Making Money by Morally Responsible Investing, the author explains that “There are numerous examples of dirty rotten scoundrels who have made killings in the stock market.” The reality is that many people will get away with terrible things in business. But the Bible explicitly states how God feels about those
