As a small boy, Thomas entered school just like every other boy his age. He was a very inquisitive child whom his teacher labeled as “addled” which in today’s society would probably be ADHD. Once his mother found out after only three months of formal education, she pulled him from the school and started to homeschool. Thomas was later quoted as saying "My mother was the making of me. There are several different stories as to how he became hard of hearing such as loud noises from his experiments, being picked up by his ears from a train conductor, and losing his hearing after fighting off scarlet fever.
